Dog friendly?

We are planning a trip to the Custer area and Mt Rushmore park and area. Is it a good area to take your dog? Will there be things to do and places we can take the dog with us?

Dog friendly?

The area is generally good for dogs with a few exceptions. Of course, you%26#39;ll need to find lodging that allows dogs. Mt. Rushmore does not allow dogs but does allow you to leave the dog in the car while you visit the monument. Since parking is in a (shaded) parking ramp on all but the top level, your car will stay cool enough for your dog. You can also board the dog for the half day or so you%26#39;re going to visit Mt. Rushmore.

National Parks and Monuments are typically the only places with restrictions. You%26#39;ll be allowed to keep your dog in your car while you drive through but you can%26#39;t hike or get away from roads or parking lots with your dog. Along with Mount Rushmore, these places in the area include the Badlands, Wind Cave, Devils Tower and Jewell Cave (although there%26#39;s not really any place to take your dog at Jewell Cave anyway).

Assuming you like to do things that a dog likes–like walking and hiking, you%26#39;ll find a lot of areas that your dog will enjoy. Trails in Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest are dog friendly.

I travel with my dog throughout the West and the only time I don%26#39;t bring it along is if I%26#39;m staying within the boundaries of a National Park–like Yellowstone–for days on end.
